Indie Spotlight: The Go! Experiment

coldhard

Remember BET’s Cypher during the 2009 BET awards? Imagine that, only not scripted and featuring local emcees, local production and hosted at a local boutique. Yeah. I was excited too. The Go! experiment is all of the above hosted by PHLI guy Dave Jeff (good looks on the skull cap) and took place at Leaders 1354 on Wells in Chicago. Fake Shore Drive, Enstrumental, Endanged Peace also had a hand in the show as well as some pretty awesome product placement. Its split into five segments of heat, and I’m sure that you’ll hear at least one rapper you can feel. If you don’t look at any other segment, check out Set 4. Between Mikkey Halsted, Cold Hard and Naledge, I squealed at least five times (II). Read more for all five sets.

Dope: Threadless

store_bway_01

Attention T-shirt junkies. Get your fix every Friday at Threadless (Broadway) in Chicago. Originally an online depot gone bricks and mortar, this place works well for the t-shirt hound that needs new and inexpensive graphic tees like fat kids need cake. This place also does a lot of unique things with its products and storefront, all of which make me wish I could work here part-time. Read more for the uniquities of Threadless and for a peek inside the store.

Iphone App: Freestyle

Since the Flypt app has been a bust, I was looking for an app fix when I heard about this gem: the Freestyle App. It is just as it sounds, an app that serves as a notebook for emcees. It comes complete with beats to rhyme to, a notepad for when a classic lyric hits you, and a feature that lets you record and email your cyphers to the homies. Since I freestyle around the house all day anyway, I thank the developers of this app for allowing me to share these sessions with the family. Read more for a review and videos.

iPhone App: FLYP’T

As if you need another reason to love your iPhone, I saw this and thought it was really dope. It allows you to remix music on your iPhone. Yes, remix songs, on your iPhone. Other features include in-app music purchases as well as the ability to upload your own mixes to a community of other music mash-up hacks. For laptop DJ wanna-bees such as myself, this threatens to be highly addictive. Lots of comparisons on the web to the ever popular, “I Am T-Pain” app, but I think this one going be of Ocarina proportions, only with way cooler people. App realeases on October 26. Read more for the confusing press release and demo.
